Zinc:

Zinc is used for treatment and prevention of zinc deficiency and its consequences, including stunted growth and acute diarrhea in children, and slow wound healing. Zinc is needed for the proper growth and maintenance of the human body. It is found in several systems and biological reactions, and it is needed for immune function, wound healing, blood clotting, thyroid function, and much more. Meats, seafood, dairy products, nuts, legumes, and whole grains offer relatively high levels of zinc.

It is also used for boosting the immune system, treating the common cold and recurrent ear infections, and preventing lower respiratory infections. It is also used for malaria and other diseases caused by parasites.

Iron is vital for the production of hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that ferries oxygen to cells. About 15% of the body's iron is stored for future needs and mobilized when dietary intake is inadequate. When iron levels in the blood are low for a prolonged period of time, there is insufficient iron available to support normal red blood cell production, which may result in iron-deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency can limit oxygen delivery and the production of enzymes that rely on iron to function properly, including those involved in energy production.

Insufficient dietary iron is often the culprit in iron deficiency and iron-deficiency anemia, but chronic bleeding or a large blood loss may also be to blame.
